The right and often simplest of updates and remodel can create a stylish and functional space. It doesn’t need to cost a lot of money either. So, if your powder room is from decades past, it may be time for an update. It’s so worth it! Let’s dive in!
Powder Room Remodel Assessment

Assess your current Powder Room remodel ideas, inspecting the layout and functionality of the existing room. With only two main fixtures in the space, chances are everything is going to keep it’s current location. This eliminates the potential for major expense. In this case, it’s just updating and refreshing what is already there.
A total remodel in an old, outdated Powder Room will include new surfaces (flooring, paint, and maybe wainscoting, if you like) and new toilet and sink as well as new lighting. A fresh new look awaits!
Everything in the powder room needs to be removed. All of the old surfaces peeled away sometimes involving several layers.

At this point you need to decide on a clear goal for your update. Is this going to be for your personal enjoyment or is it maybe for resale value. A boost in resale value is going to be there either way. But if you are doing it strictly to list the house on the market, you may want to make more frugal choices, getting the biggest bang for your buck as they say. If it is for personal enjoyment, and plan on staying in the home for the foreseeable future, you may splurge on nicer fixtures and finishes to suit your comfort.
What Fixtures and Finishes do You Want?

In a small space, such as a powder room, you are limited as to the size of the fixtures that you select. Toilets are pretty standard size but when it comes to the sink, you need to select the best size that fits the space. Round or elongated bowls as well as many different styles and colors as we discussed in our creating a bathroom from scratch page. You need to take careful measurements and then choose between a wide variety of vanities or pedestal sinks.
Popular finishes in powder rooms include ceramic stainless steel, marble, and brass, the choice is yours. Pick a finish that complements the overall theme of your home be it modern, rustic, traditional, etc.
Walls, Floors and Ceilings

When it comes to walls floors and ceilings there are decisions that need to be made. Do you want ceramic tiles or laminate flooring, there are also vinyl options. As far as the walls go paint colors need to be chosen and we chose a dark dramatic color on the upper half of the walls. When you move up to the ceiling you may want to install crown molding, as we did, for a more elegant look.
When painting, make sure that you use bathroom or appropriate for damp locations paint. It really shouldn’t be as much of an issue in a powder room because there is no bathtub or shower generating a lot of steam. You can even opt for wallpaper and may want to consider wainscoting on the walls for that custom look.
Powder Room Lighting and Ventilation

Another powder room remodel ideas must have is lighting which can really enhance a space. It is an important feature in any room and the powder room is no exception. Vanity lighting is a wonderful feature. If there wasn’t any prior to the remodel, it can be added but involves an electrician getting involved and that can be pricey. General lighting may be in the form of a ceiling fixture. Our small powder room actually had both.
Ventilation is very important. Some powder rooms have windows providing natural light and ventilation. Others may not and may be interior rooms of a house. This is where ventilating exhaust fans are critical. Many bathrooms you will find both natural and mechanical ventilation. We have a good size window in ours.
Adding Your Personal Touch

Now it’s time to personalize the powder room remodel ideas with your finishing touches. choosing a stylish mirror (with or without storage) can be fun, so many choices from framed or unframed to oval, round square, or rectangle to beveled or flat glass. Styles to fit every taste.
And finally adding decorative touches such as Hand towels, stylish soap dispensers, plants, or candles. You may even have space for some floating shelves. When it comes to powder room remodel ideas, let the creativity flow!
Powder Room Remodel Budgeting the Costs
Set a realistic budget for your powder room remodel by listing how much all of your fixtures are going to be and the materials you expect to use in the project. Then you can decide whether you want to do some or all of the tasks DIY or higher a professional. Of course hiring a professional is going to be more money. Even if you just paint and install shelves and hang the mirror you can save money by doing it yourself. You should be able to get a pretty accurate budget for your new Powder Room Remodel.
