In The Beginning
The house in this example is a Cape style home built in 1947. The front door entrance was outdated, to say the least. The entrance is a single 36 inch door with a sidelite on the left and the right. It was all painted in a mono-tone which did not highlight any detail surrounding the entrance. The trim work was very basic and needed some molding to highlight the entrance with more detailed millwork.

To Get The Front Door Transformation Started
To get the project started we first removed the existing railing. We decided that the existing solid concrete steps would be too cumbersome to remove so we came up with a design that would go over and conceal the original steps.
The entrance to the house had nice solid concrete walkways surrounding the original steps providing a nice foundation for a floating porch that will sit right on top of the concrete on wood posts. With it being floating, no permits were required for the construction and installation of the front porch.
The next task was to construct the front porch using pressure treated wood with 4×4 posts for support and 2×8 framing. The top surface was then finished with pressure treated decking boards. The 4×4 posts on the surface of the porch are for the railing to be installed on both sides of the porch.
The Trim And Finishes
The actual porch is just the beginning. New wall lanterns were installed with a matching post light in the front yard landscaping. The trim and molding around the front door need to be upgraded as well to complete the front door entrance transformation. We are also putting a dental molding the entire length of the house underneath the soffit for added detail.
The front door was complemented with trim surround and a substantial crown molding over the door. The house was repainted as part of the transformation and all trim was painted a contrasting color to highlight the detail.
